Tules

20” x 16” | acrylic on panel | 2024

I used layers and layers of acrylic over imagery of a dried lake bed to create an encaustic effect. Acrylic skins with shell imagery were embedded into the layers to create depth and a sense of history. These are freshwater snail and mussel shells that I found at the bottom of a mostly dried up reservoir in the high desert of Oregon. Included are tules that grow in the shallow marshy areas and the large migratory Sand Hill Cranes that depend on this resource. These mussels and snails filter and keep water clean for all organisms.
